Clara Schumann
Clara Schumann (1819-1896) was a German pianist and composer, wife of the German composer and pianist Robert Schumann.
She was the first female professor at the Hoch Conservatory in Fráncfort, and an excellent interpreter of Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt and Schumann himself, she directed the edition of her husband’s works.
Her musical proficiency had already been established on her tours, but the birth of eight children limited her career, and in 1853 she abandoned composition, an area in which she showed considerable potential. Subsequently, however, Schumann’s mental deterioration led her to resume touring full-time.
